Title Time in LaCrosse (Again)

I really did plan on going to Rockford on September 28 to watch our entry and to hang around with some of our friends with their late models, but fate would change that as I was in the local ER having my foot x-rayed. Contrary to popular rumor, the tumble down my steps had nothing to do with alcohol, rather while carrying the last load of furniture belonging to my son to our basement, I missed a step and did the “Jack and Jill” thing to the bottom. End of story, inflatable cast and crutches for one week, but out of the penalty box by Oct. 4 for La Crosse. But enough of my issues, on to our race report.

At Rockford the car was okay in practice and the team was hungry for a win. With only a few races left this is an item on our to-do list that has eluded us this year. Also James has collected a few “faster than a speeding bullet” awards from this track, and he wanted to add one to his private collection. Other entries would find the groove better than us, and we would be credited with forth fast qualifier. Not bad, but not great.

Like almost everyone else there, we would be at the mercy of the ten cautions during the feature race which is a huge amount for the Mid Am series. We started on the inside due to the inversion, and fought all day to get the grip necessary to advance. On a couple of the restarts when we could get to the outside, we were able to advance and were positioned in 3 rd place by lap 14, and at one time were up to 2 nd before another caution started us back on the inside again. Back and forth we followed while Spoonmore, Smart, and Gerke raced to the front.

With the white flag in site, the #5 Prietzel machine slowed dramatically on the track due to what we believe was over heating, and we were able to move around Bill’s car to finish 7 th and gain points on the series. As of this report we are happy to find ourselves 68 points in front of now second place Shear. The outcome certainly could have been worse for us. Congratulations to Jeremy Spoonmore on a well fought race.

So now we move on to La Crosse, and one more time, the Berge race team has to defend their points lead in the last race of the season. This can be a stressful time as you never know what fate will bring you on a race track, but you have to race your race, keep a close on the cars in front and around you. A good spotter and crew will help keep the team in good shape.

This time of year I am happy that this is the last race, and sad to think another season is ending. Living here in the Midwest it is hard for us race fans as we have such a long lapse between the last October race and Speed Weeks in February. I also miss our get together in the hauler at races, solving all the world’s problems and talking to our racing friends.

So stop by and say hi and party with the Hankscraft gang till the cows come home Saturday night, no matter what the outcome.

May all competitors racing this weekend come home safe!

Racing to the Checkers,
Jim
